Family Planning Campaign Launched

The District Director of Health Services, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai-Bibiani.  Mr Joseph Amoabeng has stated that family planning gives a lot of benefit to men, women, children, the Community and Ghanaians as a whole.  

The women remain healthy, there reduction in maternal mortality.  Men are able to take good care of their family and there is reduction in social problems such as drunkenness and family conflicts among others.  Children remain healthy and are able to get good education, Social vices such as robberies are reduced.
 
He cautioned that abortion is not a family planning method as some people think and urged Ghanaians that family planning services include method and practices to space births, limit family size and prevent unwanted pregnancies. He said Pregnancy by choice and not by chance is a basic requirement for women’s health.  

Dr Joseph Amoabeng said these during the campaign launch of family planning at Bibiani in the Western Region.
 
He mentioned some of the objective of family planning, as the provision of affordable contraceptive services and the availability of safe and effective methods,  access to information, education and counseling to individuals and couples to enable them decide freely and responsibly the number of children they want to have and the spacing of their children, to prevent and manage  Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) HIV and AIDS and to promote dual protection and also to assist couples to achieve pregnancy and have babies.
 
He added that, In Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District acceptor rate for family planning services in is low.  In 2006 the district coverage was 14%.  Compared to 15.5% in Western Region and 25.4% in the whole country.

He therefore urged that, with the collaboration of traditional leaders, the District Assembly, Communities, the media, NGOs, the Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service and other Ministries and Departments.  He foresee family planning taking its rightful place in the health care delivery in Ghana, and more especially in Bibiani-Anhwiaso- Bekwai.
