Kofi Annan laid to Rest

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres and 10 Heads of States across the globe joined Ghana and the World to bid farewell to Kofi Atta Annan, Ghana’s illustrious diplomat in Accra.

Recounting memories of Busumburu Kofi Annan, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, described him as a man who devoted his life to promote peace where ever there was discomfort.

“Kofi Annan was an ardent believer in the capacity of the Ghanaian and African to chart his or her own course on to the path of progress and prosperity’’, he stated.

The President recalled that despite the unjustified attacks on him, trying to fix him with responsibility for the genocides in Rwanda and Srebrenica when he was then head of UN Peace operations, the late Kofi Annan never lost his moral compass, as he showed when he stood up to the might of the United States of America when America was embarking on its ill-fated intervention in Iraq.

President Akufo-Addo said history had shown that Kofi Annan’s unavailing effort to establish the supremacy of international law over the actions of even the world’s greatest power, won him the admiration of all right-thinking persons.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres described Kofi Annan as an outstanding leader by all stands, who served well and kept serving the UN even after he had finished his terms as the UN boss.

He said Kofi Annan was the United Nations and the United Nations was Kofi Annan, as he was a guiding force for good, especially during the tumultuous era in which he led the United Nations. This was when he combined compassion, commitment and diplomatic skills to bring the organization closer to the world’s people.

In addition, Mr. Guterres said Kofi Annan built the foundation of peace and gave life to the values of the charter.

Mr. Guterres mentioned that the late Kofi Annan pioneered new ideas and initiatives during his tenure, including the elaboration of the Millennium Development Goals and the Comprehensive reform proposals set out in his landmark report.

He was of the view that though Kofi Annan was gone, his legacy lives on and urged all to heed to the voice of grace and wisdom.

The late Kofi Annan’s widow, Nane Maria Annan and his three kids, Kojo, Ama and Nina paid tributes to their late father.
