Security agencies rescue two abducted Canadians

Government has announced the rescue of two Canadian volunteers who were abducted in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The two unnamed students, aged 19 and 20, were working as volunteers for a charity when they were abducted.

Briefing the press yesterday in Accra, the Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, noted that the rescue operation led to the arrest of five Ghanaians and three Nigerians at Kenyasi, a suburb of Kumasi on Wednesday following security intelligence gathered.

“At 1900 hours, a first arrest was made, by 21:15 hours, one of the persons who is an accomplice directly involved in this incident was also arrested by the joint team running this operation. A local Ghanaian contact who was providing... for the kidnappers was apprehended around 20:45 hours leading to the arrest of the other accomplices.”

“The holding place of the victims was subsequently surrounded just before 5 am this morning [Wednesday] and by 5:15 am, a joint team had breached the premises with the hopes of rescuing the girls. Gunshots were fired from within the premises and it took about 25 minutes to complete this operation. By the end of the operation, the two Nigerians who were holding the women had been subdued and the third Nigerian believed to be the leader of the gang was arrested later at a separate location,” he stated.

The operation was carried out by Ghana’s security services without any foreign assets or assistance, the minister stressed, while dismissing claims that the Canadian government assisted the operation with satellite data.

He mentioned National Security, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) and Defence Intelligence as the agencies which took part in the operation.

“The girls are safe and sound,” Mr Nkrumah said, adding that they are currently in Accra being assessed by doctors and psychologists in Accra. He also disclosed that the parents of the pair have been in touch with them.
