Consultative Conference On Internally Generated Funds (IGF) Held In Kumasi (A/R)

A two-day consultative conference on internally generated funds (IGF) for stakeholders in the northern sector of the country was yesterday held in Kumasi.

Themed: “Maximizing Internally Generated Revenue Potentials For Improved Local Service Delivery” ,the conference was attended by more than 500 participants from metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs), public sector institutions and other stakeholders.

It aimed at eliciting views from stakeholders to enable the Ministries of Local Government and Rural Development and Finance develop a comprehensive strategic framework to guide internally generated funds implementation efforts.

The Kumasi conference is the first of two sub-national zonal conferences. The second one would be held in Cape Coast, culminating in a national conference on IGF where the outcome of the deliberations would be subjected to a final validation.

Opening the workshop, the deputy minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Emmanuel Agyekum, said Ghana had chalked successes in the decentralization process.

He said the implementation of composite budgeting, the transfer of district’s assemblies common fund and the introduction of district development facility were some of the achievements to show for the local system.

He drew participants’ attention to the administrative constraints affecting IGF and called for coordination of efforts in addressing these challenges.

The outgoing Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Eric Opoku, in an address for him said the overdependence of MMDAs on central government was worrying.

He, therefore, called on participants to come up with recommendations to address the problem.
