Ningo Prampram District Assembly Empowers Persons with Disabilities

The District Chief Executive of the Ningo Prampram District Assembly, Mr Jonathan Teye Doku, has presented 35 refrigerators, valued at GH¢63,000.00, to some Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s) in the district.

This is to empower them economically, improve upon their standards of living as well as ensure social inclusion.

Similarly, the Assembly paid the school fees (GH¢ 15,000) of eight students with disabilities. The donation is the second this year. Earlier this year, the first batch of beneficiaries received similar but varying items.

Interacting with the beneficiaries, Mr Teye Doku explained that the items were procured based on the request of each beneficiary.

Persons with disabilities face physical and social barriers. They are usually stigmatised, excluded from socialisation and live in abject poverty. Based on this, the government is keenly interested in changing this status quo to meeting the first Sustainable Development Goal “ending poverty in all its forms everywhere”.  It is for this reason that the government increased the disability fund from 2% to 3%, Mr Teye Doku said.

According to the Department Social and Community Development officer, Mrs. Augustina Nartey, the shifting away from distributing cash grants to providing economically viable items to these group of people has proven worthwhile based on the department’s monitoring and evaluation reports.

She, therefore, entreated beneficiaries to think about the economic activity that would be fruitful, consider their disabilities and the community in which they find themselves, before making their requests.
